Faultless work of the vehicles, correct navigation by the team, the experience in overcoming Plutorana Plateu and Verhoyansk Ridge, alongside with big amount of rivers, including Enisey and Lena, make round-the-world trip on Sherp realistic.
A little reminder – the transcontinental expedition “To the East!” is conducted using four Russian ATVs “Sherp”. It started on the 14th of April from Archangelsk and planned to finish in the beginning of November in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatskiy. The main goal that the adventurers had was to surmount the summer route along the Polar Circle and demonstrate the abilities of the unlimited transport connection in the difficult remote regions of the North. Having passed the biggest part of the route the team has decided to continue the expedition beyond the borders of Russia.
By the mid-September the key points of the project have stayed behind: Plutorana Plateu, conquering of the other two ridges: Verhoyansk and Chersk. “To the East!” expedition has become the first to ride on wheels though these territories.
Back in July when Plutorana Plateu, the highest and highly dissected ridge in Mid-Siberian highland, was crossed on ATVs Sherp, which before could only be done by helicopter, water or on foot, has become the turning point for the expedition. The chances for the route to be completed have grown significantly.
The team spent three weeks to surmount the plateu and crossed in by the equator from west to east wit maximum height of 1400 meters above sea level.
Telling about the mountain stages of the expedition, its head Alexey Garagashyan pointed out: “The crossing the plateu, and later the mountain ridges with a rise to a significant height – is a real challenge for the machines and the team. A few times we had to use hoist to help our vehicles to surmount the obstacles, but the main part of the route “Sherps” have passed on their own”.
When crossing the rivers the most important role played the precision of the navigation. Thus on Lena, the vehicles moved on a surface which was 5 kilometers wide with a small depth, islands and shallows. “Faultless work”, – the head has given the praise toe work of its navigating officer Pavel Emelin.
A test ten-wheel model of Sherp operated by the head of the expedition, has shown itself to the best of its abilities when the expedition was passing the narrow, but fast paced mountain rivers, which was a great challenge for the standart “Sherps”. Thanks to its length and power it easily manages rise and descent on the steep river banks. It is also able to hold straight on course with little fluctuations even in the fast stream. Other Sherps moved in these conditions with hoist and cord attached to the big “Sherp”.
A decision about the course change was made in Zhigansk, where the team spent a few days. According to the new plan “Sherps” will head to Chukotka, and finish the Russian part of the expedition in Adadyr. After sine rest the team will go back to the “Main Land”. It will then cross the Bering Sea, which washes the shores of Russia and USA and then continue its way on Alaska.
The second part of the expedition is planned for the beginning of 2019.
