In the last few days the team has moved along river Kureika really far. Finally they left it
behind and went up to the Plateau itself. Vladimir Shilnikov told us the news of the last
few days, and our photographers finally shared amazing photos of Plutorana Plateau
with us. .
- One more day, one more little step that took us closer to our yet so far goal. Nothing
new has happened. Same crossings across the same river. Kureika, we will need to
write you a song, or call an apple tree in my garden after you. We have seen so much of
- OK, let me tell you about the crossings. In the morning we went right into water from the
pebble beach we were staying on. Habitually, the ten wheeler blows the water, creating
white foam. In the next few minutes it is on the left shore. Next Sherps follow. It looks
like a carousel. First try – unsuccessful. Go back to the shallow and try again. This time
lucky. All of us are on the left side. Then we take a long driver through the forest. The
trees are growing close to one another and it becomes difficult getting throug. Alexey
decisively takes us towards the river. Along the shore the stream is not so rapid and we
can move forward towards the stream. When the bushes ended we make a jump onto
the following island. Few more kilometers are gone. That is how we move forward.
- It is considered to be inhabitant and it is almost impossible to meet a human being.
However it does happen. On the next shallow we meet water tourists. They are like us –
didn’t think they would meet anyone around these parts. And here we go – the lovers of
the wild nature have met. We stopped, had a chat and exchanged our impressions of
the Plutorans. It is really amazing and exciting – we had that in common.
- But it is time to move on. Few more short crossings and we are back to the forest. It is
really sparse, see-through. Low larches don’t bother the ATVs. After a kilometer and a
half we got to a high shore of our beloved Kureika, which is really challenging to cross,
but now we can’t even go down towards it. But this is handy, because it is becoming
late and we need to start thinking about camping and having dinner.
- Kureika stayed behind. In the morning we were looking at it from its steep shore, but
now , in the evening, we are standing on Yaktaly River. But let me tell you about the
events in order.
- Where we had our previous camp, there were no plain descents towards the river. Here
and further there are steep and even steeper shores. There is no point to go back
because we need to get to the mouth of Yaktaly. And we can only get there along the
stream with a loss of height. So we had no choice.
- In the mean while Alexey Garagashyan prepared a safety rope that was connected to
each Sherp one after another, holding them on the slope descent. The other end of the
rope was connected to the joint ATV. It helped all Sherps to get on water and then went
down itself. New ten wheeler is so stable due to its length that it easily managed the

Then a short stop and one more crossing with the exit to the joint with Yakhtaly river. It
is three times smaller than Kureika but in any case a river with rapid stream. Luckily the
shores aren’t very steep yet, so we can catch the edges with our wheels. That is exactly
what we were doing while going up the stream. In a few kilometers we went to an inflow
descending from the mountains. It has a funny name Burdekhan. Please remember the
name. Probably another stage of our trip will begin from it; very different, very unlike
everything else before.

- The smart person will not walk up a mountain, but he will ride there. This is exactly what
- We shook off the leftovers of the river water and finally stood onto the land. Now we are
ready to try our wheels on the mountain peaks.
- Morning. The weather is so so – first sun, then rain. However we turn the keys and start
our diesel Kubota engines. We are ready to conquer the impregnable slopes. Firstly
though the quadcopter is flying out first to check the situation. Drone DJI Phantom4 is a
very good and useful thing. It can shoot a great video or monitor the situation from the
top. The tactics of surmounting a difficult relief is usually done with quadcopters. Because before we get to the rocky peaks of Plutorana Plateau, we first need to find the
way in the piedmont, among stone falls, canyons, streams and thick forests.
- After the scouting we took a decision to begin. First of course the joint ATV goes. It is
operated by Alexey Garagashyan and Olga Khromova. After them on Sherps we have
Pavel Emelin and Dima Pavlov, Volodya Nikolaev and Timofey Cherkasov, and we –
Sasha Teplyakov and Vladimir Shilnikov – are closing down. I can’t say it was terribly
difficult today, the main difficulties are ahead of us, but we had opportunites to show off
some driving skills. There were streams, descents, forests and climbing, climbing,
climbing. We practically reached six hundred meters vertically in a day. We went along
the right shore of Burdykhan river until the first more or less big inflow, coming almost
from the mountain top. Here we spent the evening. Tomorrow we will have another air
exploration and decide on the tactics of our move and lay the new route. But at the time
being we have a wonderful view to the valley, stream, clouds, rainbow connecting the
canyon and the mountain before us. And even a slight drizzle can’t spoil the mood.
