All-terrain vehicles SHERP, Expedition

The Russian part of the transcontinental expedition “To the East” has come to an end.

A long route from Archangelsk to Anadyr was passed in six months. The participants of the expedition are coming back to the Mainland.

“For each one of us it was the biggest adventure in our lives. We crossed the entire country along the northern Polar circle. We saw many towns, villages, met their citizens, saw how people live there. We managed to see the amazing beauty of Plutorana Plateau and crossed the Verhoyanskiy, Cherskiy and Momskiy Ridges. We crossed the great Syberian rivers Lena, Enisey and many other not so big rivers. The beauty of these places will forever stay in our hearts’ – finalizes the overview of the expedition its participant Vladimir Nikolaev.

We would like to remind you that the transcontinental expedition has become possible only with the appearance of ATV amphibians “Sherp” which are able to overcome all-terrain even the hardest one. Four ATVs with low pressure wheels (which if compared to the usual tracks multiplies the passability of the vehicles) left Archangelsk on 14 April 2017 and headed east.

Старт экспедиции в АрхангельскеThe chances on completion of the all season route within the Polar circle were discussed with a certain degree of skepticism. The expedition was meant to overcome a difficult mountainous and water surface, drive autonomously far from infrastructure. For that reason before Plutorana Plateau – the highest and really widely split Central Siberian Plateau – the team’s commentraries were rather reserved. The goal was quite ambitious, which couldn’t be compared with any tasks that were set before. However after the crossing of the Plateau it became quite clear that the route was meant to be finished.

In the six months the team passed 9701 km, and the preparation for the expedition was 2 years. Pavel Emelin – the navigating officer for the expedition told us: “Hardly anyone can imagine how the country’s terrain looks like. We had to learn it, literally understand what would be underneath our wheels. We leant the terrain, the plants, the fauna, height, water reserves. I learnt how tundra looks, what is taiga and mountainous terrain. Two years were spent on creating a route. The past five months we were working nearly 24/7”.

The high passability of Sherps is due to its unique wheels. Each one is 800 liters and 1,6 meters in diameter. It can surmount all terrain and floats well too” – comments on the results the leader for the expedition Alexey Garagashyan. “Every arrival to any settlement in Yakutiya was greeted with bewilderment “How did you come here? There are no roads?!”. But I can say with confidence that in the entire expedition time we haven’t met a single reason for us to stop. And we got through spring mudslides, floods, crossed mountains, forests and swamps.”

The decision about changing the final part of the route (the original plan was meant to finnish in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatskiy) was made in the last third of the was with a connection to the idea for the expedition to become international. Therefore Chukotka – the border territory of Russia – will become the starting point of the second stage of the expedition that will begin with the Bering sea crossing and will continue on the territory of the North America in 2019.
