Expedition “To the East!” May 7-9

We have arrived to Vorkuta in the evening of May 6. The team went to get some rest. They
have spent a few days in civilization and went back on the road. The expedition track took them
by the Vorgashorskaya and Komsomolskaya mines. City of the hard working people, city of the
miners – Vorkuta has invited us very warmly.

  • Now it is quite late in the evening already. We will start our acquaintance with the city
tomorrow. That is why all the best photos and emotions will follow later. We can assure you
that it will be the most unforgettable meeting with the north of our country.

This day, spent in Vorkuta, was very bright for the participants of the expedition “To the East!”.
In the morning the caravan left a warm parking spot and went to the center of the city. A
celebration of winter sendoff has started. At the square there was a large scarecrow, very
similar to Maslenitsa. The main difference is that the winter sendoff here is not by calendar, but
by the actual weather conditions. Soon tundra will open up and a new life will begin. It will be
as short as northern summer.

  • ATVs lined up in front of the City Hall for everyone to see. However before that we had to meet
Ury Alexandrovich Dolgikh – the city mayor and Igor Valerievich Guriev – a head of the
administration. The meeting was very pleasant and friendly. Even the press conference was
held in a trusting, almost non-official tone.

Outside the celebration gained its pace, the citizens were dancing around the scarecrow, sang
songs. The ATVs were also popular. The people went near, asked questions. The children took
photos next to Sherps. Then at some point people lined up in a queue to get a chance to go
inside the vehicles.

The second part of the day the team spent working. They serviced the vehicles, disassembled
the food and spare parts packages that were sent previously.

  • Despite the desire to go round Vorkuta, we didn’t get a chance to do it. We had little free time.
However even this brief acquaintance with the city left a really pleasant impression. The
citizens are really friendly, ready to offer help if necessary. Our friend Evgeniy Nazimov met us
and guided through the city, placed our vehicles in a warm parking place, told us about history,
architecture and life of the citizens. Slowly but surely we felt lots of respect for this workers city
which is famous for its mines. Despite of the economic difficulties, the citizens are planning city
development and believe in the future. We really hope it goes well for them.

Having finished with servicing and stocking our team left the city.

  • Now it is late at night and we are standing at the foothill of the Polar Ural. Behind us there is a
valley, in front of us there are mountains. A kilometer away from us there is a lake Estoto.
People say that it is relic and sacred. We will see it tomorrow. We have passed not that much
today – just seventy five kilometers. Half of the way took place on a virgin soil. On the map
there is a road marked, but in reality it is not there – only tracks from snowmobiles. Also lots of
hares’ prints. There are so many hares here. They run in bunches of fifteen – twenty really close
to the ATVs. And here we are going our way, and they continue their – people and animals on
this mysterious and breathtakingly beautiful northern land.

  • The forecast for today was good and truthfully so. The sun is shining and the sky is filled with
moving sparse clouds, creating a game of light and shadows on the snowy mountain slopes.

We promised to tell you about Estoto lake, but unfortunately we can’t. The team has passed on
top of it and didn’t even notice. On the snow it doesn’t matter where the border is, because
you can’t see the shore.

  • To see it you should come here in summer. The only thing I can do for you is to quote some
short information from the Internet – in fact it consists of two lakes joint together with a creek.
One is shallow and the other is deep, over ninety meters. And the drop off begins two meters
from the shore. It’s an interesting place.

  • The climb to the pass was quite easy. In the second gear. A herd of deer has just passed before us, all the snow is trampled and everywhere there are traces of the hooves of animals. It is difficult to say whether this prevented us or, on the contrary, helped. I repeat, they rose easily, even with some disappointment, that there was no struggle.

At the top the team decided to do some shooting before continuing. It took a lot of time but
was totally worth it.

    • Later we were passing along the valleys between the mountains, along rivers and streams. On
both sides from us we could see mountain tops covered in snow, looking like enormous sugar
      heads.

    • We passed 106th kilometer (Polyarniy village). Some time ago it was rather big, but nowadays
it’s uninhabited. Now there are not less than a dozen old two-storey barracks, ready to fall
down at any given moment. On the way we saw a couple of chooms – homes for the deer
herdsman. We stopped near some of those, talked with the inhabitants, made acquaintances.

  • In the evening we stopped in a forest next to a stream with a really difficult name –
Nyrdvomanshor. Above us were the grey mountains, a full moon over the valley… spectacular
    view.

The expedition is continuing.
